Clamelle tablets can be bought without a prescription from participating pharmacies as part of the Clamelle chlamydia testing service. First, you buy and use the Clamelle chlamydia test kit, which is a simple urine test that is sent off to a laboratory. You can choose to have your result sent to you in the post, or to find out your result by returning to the pharmacy. The results are usually ready within seven days

If your test comes back positive and you don’t have any symptoms of STIs, you can then buy Clamelle tablets to treat the infection. You will need to take either your results letter, or the verification tear off slip from your test, to the pharmacy. The pharmacist will verify your result online first, using the secure lab database, and will then ask you some questions to make sure it is safe for you to take the tablets.

If you have tested positive, the pharmacist will provide you with partner notification slip(s) for you to give or send to your partner(s) to help with letting them know they may have chlamydia and encouraging them to seek treatment. Partners can then use this notification slip to buy Clamelle tablets from the pharmacy (if suitable) without needing to buy a test.

You can also buy Clamelle tablets if you have a positive NHS chlamydia test, providing you take the result slip to the pharmacy and the pharmacist decides you are eligible. If you are a partner of someone who has had a positive NHS chlamydia test, you can also buy Clamelle tablets, provided the pharmacist decides you are eligible. You will need to take your NHS partner notification slip to the pharmacy.

How should I take azithromycin?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. The dose and length of treatment with azithromycin may not be the same for every type of infection.

Take each tablet or capsule with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.

To use the oral suspension single dose packet: Open the packet and pour the medicine into 2 ounces of water. Stir this mixture and drink all of it right away. Do not save for later use. Throw away any mixed oral suspension that has not been used within 12 hours.

To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away.

Azithromycin capsules must be taken on an empty stomach. Take the capsule at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a meal. Azithromycin tablets or powder oral suspension may be taken with or without food. Take the tablet or oral suspension with food if the medicine upsets your stomach. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Azithromycin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused liquid medicine after 10 days.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
